Assignment tasks
TaskAssignments
1. Individual blogs (35%): Throughout the semester, you will write 3 blog entries in response to assigned topics, related to the genres of multimodal texts discussed in class. The 3 entries count toward 30% of your grade for this assignment. You will also need to comment on your groupmates’ blogs to provide supportive and constructive feedback (5% of assignment grade). As a group, you should set up a group site and every member should start a blog page on that group website. You then post your assignments as blog entries. Each entry should be between 200 and 300 word. You should also include at least one multimodal text for each entry. Please make sure that you cite the sources of your image/media texts. |

2. Critical Essay (35%): You will be asked to write a critical essay (about 1000 words) to demonstrate your understanding and application of the theoretical concepts discussed in class by writing a reasoned discussion of a particular text or group of texts.
You will submit drafts of their critical essays (10%) and receive feedback from the tutor during in-class writing workshops. Students will work on improving their individual essays before they submit the final versions (25%). |
Draft due in Week 9
Final due in Week 13 |
3. Group Project (30%): You will work in a small group to create a multimodal website for a neighborhood in Hong Kong. For the website, you will create a range of authentic multimodal texts, including, for example, a photo/video essay, infographics, and interactive maps.
Your group will showcase your website to the instructor and your classmates in oral presentations (20 minutes) at the end of the semester. While the websites are mainly assessed as group work (20%), individual contributions will also be evaluated (10%). Student conduct
Please refer to the departmental guidelines on Assignment Submission, Absenteeism and Plagiarism.
Assignment Submission
Students are expected to complete all written assignments on time, and to hand in their work punctually. In this context, please note the following points:
i. Late assignments will be given a lower grade;
ii. Assignments more than 7 days late will be given an 'F' grade;
iii.Individual course coordinators will decide how the deduction of marks is calculated for assignments between 1 and 7 days late;
iv.Extensions will only be given if accompanied by written proof of the need for an extension, (e.g. a medical certificate). Other serious or unavoidable personal circumstances such as death of a family member are also acceptable;
v. Students granted extensions may receive an overall 'I' = 'Incomplete' grade for the course. In this case the course coordinator will inform the student of the new deadline for submitting the assignment.
Absenteeism & Class Participation
Full-time undergraduate students are expected to attend all classes. Excused absences require a medical certificate or other form of justification. Students with more than two unexcused absences will fail the course. Postgraduate students are similarly expected to attend all classes, and must justify their absences. More than two unexcused absences will result in a failing grade. Punctuality is also required, and students are expected to be in class for the entire session.
Although there is not a separate participation grade for this course, students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and respect their instructor and classmates. Misconducts, such as repeated talking in the background while the class is in session, may negatively affect the overall course grade.
Late-drop
Requests for late-drop must be approved by the Associate Head and will only be considered when there is a strong justification (e.g. a medical emergency).
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is using the words or ideas of another writer (copied from books, articles, internet web pages and other sources) without proper attribution. The Department takes cases of plagiarism very seriously and deals severely with students who have been found to have plagiarised their work. Students who have been caught plagiarising will receive an 'F' grade on the assignment concerned and, depending on the severity of the case, may receive an 'F' for the entire course. In the event of repeated offences, student will be placed on academic probation. In some courses students will be required to submit their assignments through 'SafeAssign', a computer programme which automatically checks for plagiarism. In cases where you are unsure what constitutes plagiarism or whether or not you have provided attribution for your sources correctly, you should consult your course instructor or academic advisor.
